Malaysian SEO quotes range from RM300 a month to RM8,000 a month for what sounds like the same thing. The difference is almost never the price of the words "search engine optimisation" — it is what is included, who does it, and whether anyone measures the result.
The three ways Malaysian agencies charge
Retainers are the norm: a monthly fee for ongoing work. In Malaysia that usually lands between RM800 and RM6,000 a month depending on scope, with established Kuala Lumpur agencies at the top of that range and freelancers at RM300 to RM1,500.
Project pricing covers a defined piece — a technical audit, a content sprint, a site migration — typically RM2,000 to RM15,000. Hourly rates run RM150 to RM450 for senior work. None of these models is dishonest; they price different amounts of labour.
Why two quotes for the same work differ five-fold
Scope is the first reason. One quote is four blog posts, technical fixes and reporting. The other is sixteen posts, twenty backlinks, a landing page rebuild and a monthly strategy call. Both are called "SEO for RM2,000" and one is doing five times the work.
The second reason is who does it. A senior consultant’s hour costs more than an intern’s, and it shows in what gets decided. The third is the content: whether articles are written by someone who has spoken to your customers or assembled from a competitor’s headings.
What RM999 a month actually buys
Our package is RM399 setup and RM999 a month. That covers technical fixes, on-page work across the pages that sell, Google Business Profile management, four articles a month in English or Malay, and a monthly report on impressions, positions and enquiries by page.
It does not cover paid search management, large content volumes, or link acquisition beyond what the content earns. Those are separate, and saying so up front is cheaper for everyone than a scope argument in month three.
When cheap SEO becomes expensive
The cheapest offers usually involve bought links or bulk articles spun from competitors. Links from irrelevant sites can earn a manual action, and recovery takes months of clean-up and a reconsideration request. Bulk articles produce pages that never rank and dilute the ones that could.
A business that spends RM500 a month for a year on links it has to remove later has spent RM6,000 to move backwards. The most expensive SEO in Malaysia is not the highest monthly fee; it is the work you have to undo.
Five questions that separate a good quote from a bad one
Ask who writes the content and whether you can see a sample. Ask how many pages will change, by name. Ask what the monthly report will contain — impressions, or enquiries and cost per enquiry. Ask who owns the website, the ad account and the Search Console property. And ask what happens in month one that is not writing.
If the answers are vague, the work will be vague. A good agency will happily name the pages and the numbers, because it has planned the work rather than estimated it.
What this means for your business
SEO in Malaysia is priced between RM800 and RM6,000 a month for genuinely different amounts of work. Compare scope and measurement, not just the fee — and be suspicious of anyone who cannot tell you which pages will change.
