For a local business in Malaysia, the Google Business Profile usually produces more calls than the website does. It is also the cheapest marketing asset you own — and the one most likely to be half-finished.
What actually decides your position in the map pack
Three things: proximity, relevance and prominence. Proximity is how close you are to the searcher and you cannot change it — a business in Skudai will rarely appear for a search made in Pasir Gudang. That is why service areas and website pages carry the searches beyond your immediate radius.
Relevance and prominence are yours to control. Relevance comes from categories matching the query and services listed in detail. Prominence comes from reviews, photos, completeness and consistent information across the web.
Categories, services and the first trap
Set one primary category that matches the main thing you sell, then two or three secondary categories. More than four dilutes the primary and confuses matching. For a marketing agency the primary is "Marketing agency"; secondary options like "Internet marketing service" and "Advertising agency" widen coverage without competing with it.
The trap is putting keywords in your business name. "LeadsPilot 360 — SEO Johor Bahru" is a suspension risk and competitors can report it. The name must match your signage, invoices and website exactly.
Services with prices
The services section is where enquiries are filtered. Add each service separately with a description under 300 characters and a starting price. Listings with priced services get fewer "how much?" calls and more calls from people ready to buy.
Where a price genuinely varies, state the starting figure. "From RM999" is more useful than "call for quote", and it saves both sides a conversation.
Photos: what helps and what wastes the slot
Real photographs of your exterior with signage, the inside of the premises, the team, and finished work. Malaysian buyers recognise stock photography instantly and it undermines trust rather than building it.
Upload three or four at a time over a few weeks instead of all twelve at once, then add a few each quarter. Regular activity is read as a signal that the business is operating, and Google shows photo counts on the listing.
Reviews: the only process that works
Ask at handover, in person, and send the direct review link the same day by WhatsApp. Reply to every review, including the bad ones — a calm, specific reply persuades more future buyers than another five-star rating.
Ten to twenty recent reviews that mention the service and the neighbourhood outperform a hundred old ones with no replies. Never buy reviews: they get removed, and the removal is visible.
Four mistakes that get listings suspended
Keyword-stuffed names. A virtual office or an address you cannot verify. Service areas you do not actually cover — including listing another country because you take occasional remote clients. And changing the name repeatedly in a short period.
Suspension recovery takes weeks and needs documentation. Prevention is a few minutes of honesty in the dashboard.
What this means for your business
Complete the profile properly — categories, priced services, real photos, recent reviews — and you will outrank better-funded competitors who never finished theirs.
